Millennials and RVs: A Match Made in Heaven?
The RV business is booming! Why? Millennials all over the world are investing in recreational vehicles instead of traditional housing.
Trending interest in RV’s and campers is causing rapid growth in the industry
During the recession, the RV industry almost went completely out of business. Thanks to a combination of millennials, baby boomers, and a trending desire to travel, the industry has been growing steadily for the last 8 years and is expected to keep going. Thor and Winnebago are the two leading companies in the RV industry and have been breaking records in the selling of recreational vehicles. Smaller trailers and campers that can be towed are the most popular as of now.
Why are millennials attracted to the RV lifestyle?
Millennials are now making up for over 38 percent of campers nationally. Reasons vary among individuals, but most millennials are looking to use less space, break free from the 9-to-5 work life, and see the world. Travel is trending on all major social media platforms such as Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram and as a result, becoming a more sought-out lifestyle for those regularly exposed to it. Many millennials are using the RV lifestyle to explore environments that are changing because of pollution, population increase, and global warming. Environmental awareness is also becoming more trendy as young travelers use social media to inspire others to care for the planet.
What does this mean for the future of RV design?
RV design is radically changing as millennials are demanding new amenities in their campers such as wi-fi, laundry machines, and more efficient storage space. Extremely large recreational vehicles are becoming a thing of the past unless a large family needs the extra space. Due to tiny trailers and campers growing in popularity, designers are utilizing new material to make them lighter and more spacious. An example of this is using laminate in the construction of the walls. It travels lighter saving on gas and allows for more space inside the vehicle. Designers are also being forced to make the most out of small spaces and are coming up with new designs in storage. Consumers also want amenities to be more environmentally conscious and use less energy. Manufacturers are now incorporating items like solar panels and composting toilets into their designs.
More and more millennials are pursuing a lifestyle about collecting experience over material possessions, connecting with communities around the United States, and becoming more conscious consumers.
